#8 Eilt-Reading: Icarus Needs

Firstly, Lexia to Preplexia couldn’t be opened on my Mac because the screen doesn’t fit. But I found a video discussing the piece:

Mark Sample( the speaker in the video) said the work is a specific time of technology and technology has changed so it’s problematic to the piece. That may explain why I couldn’t open it. What I interest in Lexia to Perplexia is “Terms such as “metastrophe’ and ‘intertimacy’ work as sparks within the piece and are meant to inspire further thought and exploration.” SO I cannot wait to go through it in the class.

The piece Icarus Needs is presented as an ” a hypercomic adventure game staring everyone’s favourite mentally unhinged cartoonist, Icarus Creeps”. What needs to be discussed is ” It is literature?”. Beyond a plot in the game, I wonder it is readable or gives any literary experience to a reader. I would like to go through the piece under this question.

It is interesting to play, I have to admit. Icarus would meet different people and have different instructions to find Kit. When he finds new tools, a new trail would open to him. I passed the green, blue, yellow, and pink trials, and them eventually come to the same end.

Screenshot_3

The protagonist and antagonists would have conversations, a player would know what going on next through conversations and they could go anywhere to get materials.

The plot is simple: “Icarus has fallen asleep playing video games and become trapped inside a surreal dream world that’s part video game and part comic strip. What’s worse, somehow his girlfriend Kit has got trapped inside the same dream. Now Icarus needs to locate Kit, escape the clutches of the King of Squirrels and find some way back to the waking world. Can you get Icarus everything he needs before it’s too late?”

Personally, I don’t think it is presented as either literature or a reconstructing piece. Most importantly, it isn’t effective as a cyber reader and I would rather regard it as a recreation.

#7 Spark: Reauthoring Rachmaninoff’s Symphonic Dance

While I was reading pieces like ” Hi Muck A Muck”, “Pieces of Herself”, and “Reconstructing Mayakovsky”, I had fun playing and constructing my own “classic”. If I am going to be an elit writer, I wish my readers to engage in my work. They are more like co-authors rather than receivers. We should all enjoy the collaboration of interpreting and constructing a brand new piece. So I am considering reconstructing existed literature and artwork to fulfill my elit project.

I was studying hermeneutics, which is a study of interpretation. I respect all different understandings based on different grounds, lives, or experiences, whereas, a person’s understanding of both literature and art is distinguished and reaches out different stages. That means a person could not get to a higher level individually unless he or she accesses to others’ perspectives, a high-level thought or instructional techniques,  which are able to force he or her to understand in depth. Therefore, my goal is to bring up necessary elements and art pieces together, construct a framework based on my own understanding, and invite my readers to sew those pieces and accumulate their intelligence. I am looking forward to collect different masterpieces from my readers and exhibit them in my blogs.

My elit theme is “Reauthoring Rachmaninoff-Symphonic-Dances“. Sergi Rachmaninoff was a Russian symphonic composer.Sergei_Rachmaninoff_cph.3a40575 Readers probably did not hear about him and his music, but in my elite, it is a good begining that they approach a musician without any preparation, because they would gradually realize how close they are to Rachmaninoff and Symphonic Dances by exploring my elit.

My elementary idea is that readers are going to follow the melody, clicking their expected literature, paintings, graffiti, or photography, or adding pitches or music pieces into the symphony, and create their own “imagery”. This idea comes from my fine art class. Prof. McLaughlin requested us to draw anything jumping out our mind while we were listening to Pop, Jazz, Blue, or orchestra music. I was doing intensive drawings and I felt I could control melody at my fingertips. I had never ever expressed out so many feelings and visualized them on my papers. That was an amazing experience.

Here are my drawings

Reading elit is a discovery. What I mean by saying ” not receivers” in my opening paragraph is that readers are going to discover themselves. They are not just sitting right there and being given literature and art, rather, they are feeling new. I hope I hear words like ” I didn’t think I would love art but I do now” or ” I found I can be that talented and creative in art”. I hope they feel the same as I did and feel free to express themselves and discover their own potentials. Therefore, it does not matter if readers have a little knowledge of my elit objects, I am going to give enough instructions as well as space for them to join my “party”.

I am still planning my elit and I am not sure about elements I am going to use. Here is a map showing a rough storyboarding and element options:

"Reauthoring RSD"

Selecting elements is complex. I drew different shapes on behalf of element styles, which means I would provide disparate art and literature work, but you may find them unexpectedly harmonious.

“With Those We Love Alive”&”High Muck A Muck”

“With Those We Love Alive”- a visual adanvature without visuality

My first feeling when I played with it is ” It is so smart!” and “Maybe I can make one”. It is a twine game that readers are able to be physically involed in the plot, and whatever they choose, it will change the plot. A reader is also a writer.

Basiclly, I can read a fundanmental framwork set by the author.  Whatever I chose, I would have same hyperlinks to go. “Balcony”,”Your chambers”, “Garden”, “Workshop” and “City” are a basic trial.

Screenshot_3

What I found interetsting is there are more possibilities we can create. We are able to connect or embed ourselves in the plot by mixing our personalities into it. When I went to some hyperlinks, I found they are optional when I clicked them, I could choose  the month of my birth, my elements, my eye color, the equipment and materials I had. It’s very intriguous because it comes different consequencies based on different choices.

Compared with former pieces, “With those we love alive” is not surprising. It has basic features of an elite and the interactions are not advanced. It is not bothered by techniques, and is pure and reable literature. But it is meaningful in the time when we are beginning our first elit. WHY COULD NOT I MAKE A PIECE LIKE THAT? Even though I am a not skillful programmer and I don’t know how to visualize my elit, I can still make an excellent piece! The piece inspires me a lot and I am happy to see more possibilities.

“Hi Muck A Muck: Play Chinese an Interative Poem”- I am proud of  seeing my language shown in elite.

I love the piece.

It is so culture-related. The first page and navigation are touching. It is a man who is reading his language, missing his home. His tears as well as his emotion is an direction for us to read the piece.

When I heared the audio, they talk about China Town and Chinese women are not allowed. I was so upset and I can understand how difficult Chinese immigrantes are in foreign countries. The background music is from a restaurant nosie to a flute, which illustrates the life of a China Town and people’s strong emotion – nostalgia.

Screenshot_7

The page touches me – my land is my body. You may see rivers,  moutains, and  poetry on an human body. They represent “my” homeland and “my” culture. “My blood is China, which makes me who I am”. Especially when Chinese are away from thier land, we carry with our indentities everywhere. China is our nature.

Screenshot_8

It is an emtional piece. I am deeply touched by every pages. It not only shows “a deep engagement with issues of racism, intercultural exchange, imitation, history, economics, and Chinese immigration to Canada”, but also it tells a story, a life story, about every Chinese away from our country and  every Chinese who are missing thier country. I can find myself in it.

Pieces of Herself & Façade

“Pieces of Herself”

I love the piece! Truly! It reminds me a poem:

I Leave Bits of Me Everywhere
poem-words are my clothing,
stripped late at night
a trail from the threshold to the foot of bed
along the stairs lay verbs the actions i need to climb twelve steps at 2 am
a vowel left adjacent to toothbrush i get sloppy with tartar and allusions
over the cornice of mirror, hangs a strand of pearly metaphors
a simile in my sink
a limerick needing to be laundered the clothes hamper is full of rimes & meters in want of mending
kick off the shoes,
make a pile of cacophony wrap myself in the plum flannel of sonnet
hair up-tied with haiku
find the resting place for naked poet...
in ambiance i light a candle
a sestina goes up in flames.

The piece is a sort of reinterpretation. They are real pieces with which you can made up and know a person.  But this time, it is not “pieces of her”, but “pieces of herself”. Find the secrets? Because you are not going to find the original “her” but create a new “her”.

Screenshot_3

You can choose from seven scenes. My favorite is the “outside”. When I grabbed a little baby in the street, the old song “When I was a little girl” rose.  I can see her childhood, she played in the yard and enjoyed sun. It is so imagery.

“Façade”

There is a technical problem for me, I cannot download the exe.file. But except the technical complexity, it is a very smart piece.

Screenshot_8.png

I cannot move in! That’s disappointing. It may be something wrong with my computer. But many players show their processes on YouTube.

They are creative but a little bit dark (lol).

Screenshot_9Screenshot_10

This piece maximizes the interaction between elite and readers. It is very intelligent design and requests a high technical level.  It is more close to artificial intelligence, like Siri, but it is a insightful approach to produce elites.

Brainstrips: Strip Your Brain

Screenshot_1

I enjoy reading the piece. It is intriguing. I went through an emotional reverse when I read it. I held a high expectation to it, but the “nonsense” shown later astonished me. But it also excited me that I feel a strong intention of the author.

The author Alan Bigelow is a professor in the Interdisciplinary Studies. “Interdisciplinary” would be the theme through the whole piece. Here to learn more about Bigelow: https://www.medaille.edu/alan-bigelow-phd

Walkthrough & Analysis

The first part is “strip”.

It uses comic strips to answer “deep philosophical questions”.

Screenshot_3

The opening comic is quite interpretative.  A woman or man always says, “I am leaving you and finding the real meaning of  life.” THEN they slip away with the other man or woman and falls in a new loop. “What is the right answer of life?” that is a philosophical question that has never ever been answered.  The starting page reveals the theme of ” strip” part. It speaks of those” nonsense” and tricky questions that we try to but fail to answer in the life.

When we read those questions in advance, we would really think of those philosophically. Whereas, the author gives us a “… “. It is really creepy that we might feel ” a load of bull”, but they are so true that we cannot say they are wrong.  The author gives us an interdisciplinary perspectives. He questions what real philosophy is. Should it really base on Aristotle, Schopenhauer or Kant? His answer is NO. Philosophy is about life. We saw things from angles, we got disparate interpretations. Those questions have never ever had “right” answers.

Those strips from the Gloden Age of American Comics are recreated and be given different understandings. #Reconstructing Mayakovsky. It breaks a regular literacies and reconstructs old literature in a new way.

The next part is “Brain”.  This part is ” science of idiot”.

Screenshot_6

The title is a paradox. As the reader asked above:” Who is the idiot?” Who is the author addressing? The idiots could be science itself or the one who believes the “science” is the science.  If those scientifical elements have no meanings when they get together, what does the fact really do to us? The author reminds of us reading what behind the “facts” and do not be fooled by “idiots”.

Interestingly, you cannot go back after finishing a topic.  I feel like it is a deliberate design. We do not look back what we read as they are nothing. We should feel what we read and remember the astonishing moment. It is a sensation that let us ask WHY? What is the author want to tell us?  When science is not presented traditionally, should we accept it traditionally? When things go out of expectation, can we fit in immediately? Can we turn our mind to identify what is it?

That is also a rule in reading elit. We cannot predict what will happen next but we should keep going and exploring.

The last part is “S. It speaks of ” Higher Math.”

Screenshot_19

Those ” Googleplex”, “Geometry”, “Irrational Numbers”, ” Addition”, and “Subtraction” are not talk about mathematics. Rather, they applied to explain “values” things. But is it really “valueless”? or how do we define the “value”? Bigelow plays a tricky game with us. He let us hold a high expectation to that stuff. But he fails us. “If you are too serious with them, you are out.” He intends to involve us in playing and enjoy the electronic tour. Science and math should belong to everyone.

http://writingelectronicliterature.miazamoraphd.com/category/student-blogs/

Bigelow is not the first one who jokes the science. It reminds me of the Ig Nobel Prize.

According to Improbable Research, Ig Noble Prize awards unusual and imaginative achievements in science, medicine, and technology.  Click to know more: https://www.improbable.com/ig/.

Finally, here is a math test for you.

Screenshot_27

Again, DO BE SERIOUS. Whatever you choose, the result would be the same.

All in all. Bigelow shows us the possibility of playing knowledge and language. The philosophy, science and math are humorous but satirical. They are connected with politics, ethics and social problems. They are thought-provoking and let us ponder what the real issues behind. They are presented as the powerful language that raises new awareness. The interdisciplinary reconstructing demonstrates more possibilities of elit.

Conversations

What do you feel about the piece?/What the most intriguing topic to you?

“Hobo Lobo of Hamelin” & “ScareMail Generator”

Screenshot_5    “Hobo Lobo of Hamelin”  is my favorite elit so far. It recreates the European folktale” Pied Piper of Hamelin”.  I have never heard the folktale before but I can catch up with by reading the elit version.  I love the idea of side-scrolling and “infinite canvas”. They recall my memory of the comic books I read when I was a kid.

Screenshot_1

The third page impressed me a lot. It has a few texts, but provides a long image to show how Hobe Lobe eliminated rats. The creepy images, which illustrate death of rats, are also presented as a politcial satrie. I saw the irrelevent objects flying everywhere, such as apples, trukey, lobstor, a shirt, socks, tie and sculptrues. some sybolisms,  like the statues of liberty, may be implications of  political situations.

Screenshot_2

I really enjoy the ending. It is implict but leaves a reader some imaging space. I really want to proceed reading but it ends at page7.

Screenshot_4

The ScareMail Generater is quite siginificant. I learned its value of “nonsense” by reading its intruction and oprating the project.  it is defending the dataveillance and asking for privacy. It perhaps cannot change anything, but it stands for a brave voice and initiative awareness.

Screenshot_3

I am very curious with the reason that ScareMail can be one of the elit. By reading and dicussing with my classmates, I am gradually understanding that. The mail is using digital language to interve the NSA Deploy Program and fight against govermental surveilance.  That means some people are using electronic literature to change the traditional mind. The power of elit not only deliever message but also is a weapon to defend ourselves.  Besides ScareMail, the web provides other projects, such as Safebook, which is againt privacy stealing. Those work seems to be nonsense. But they are pioneers to  lead an innovation and revolution of human society.

Bots

Bots is a lovely elit collection where accumulates artist and literary work associated with the social networks, such as Twitter or Facebook. There are eight bots in the collection. When I clicked any of them, there would be six blocks on the page. They are about the screenshot of the web, the web entrance, Metadata, Author Statements, Editorial Statements, and Downloads. Editorial Statements would be the first place I go to. It provides basic information and summary about this bot. I can learn the general information through the homepage and do not have to enter in if I am not interested in it. The Metadata provides hyperlinks. It shows the language and keywords of each bot. If I click the hyperlinks, I can find a list which collects the language and keywords of all the bots.

When the first time I went to Bots, I felt a little perplexed because it does not have a classification or a certain theme. It covers all the artistic and literary bots. It is very hospitable to the visitors and I assume it is in the progress. My favorite bot is the crossword. I used to play crossword games in the newspaper. However, the answer should be known in the next edition. It has a time delay for the game interaction. Tiny Crossword is a twitter account that you can follow. It will release the cross puzzles in advance. The puzzle is usually based on the important 21st-century repository, which means the database is updated. The combination of the crossword puzzle and social network somehow maximizes the utility of the game.

However, I am thinking about the literary or pedagogical level of using Bots. It seems to be something absent that is able to get readers into somewhere. I feel like Bots in some ways is more like a recreation. Our readers can have fun on the Bots but I want to figure out more literacy meanings in using Bots
